Find the ideal tutor

Find the ideal tutor

Whether you want to help your child improve their grades, are attending primary or secondary school, are preparing for the Gymi exam, or are studying for a foreign language certificate yourself: A tutor can provide you with individual help with any problems and give you or your child targeted support.

However, before you embark on this adventurous search, it is advisable to consider a few things using our filters.

1. Qualifications and characteristics of the teacher

Everyone has different needs, and tutors have different knowledge and teaching methods. Therefore, it is helpful to know what to look for when searching for the ideal tutor. Basically, it is important to define what your needs are and find out which tutor could best meet these requirements.

Specialisation/subject:

First, you should consider which subject or subjects you would like to improve. If there are several subjects, ask yourself which of these subjects is the highest priority for you or your child or where the greatest need lies.

Qualifications and experience:

Once you have answered this question, take the next step and determine what subject should be taught to you or your child. This is because the subject matter determines what technical qualifications the perfect tutor must have. If the subject matter is taught at secondary school level, secondary school (district school) and, above all, technical college or university, an academic degree in the relevant subject area is recommended.

If your child is attending primary school, the need for more mature teaching skills is likely to predominate. Consider also how much teaching experience the person must have at a minimum to be able to teach the material in a way that you or your child can understand.

Language skills:

The question of the qualifications required also arises if you are preparing for a language diploma, such as a Cambridge (English) or DELF (French) diploma. Also consider whether it would be beneficial for your level to have a native speaker as a teacher.

School level:

Look at the profile pages of potential tutors to see if they have already worked with students of the same age/school level and if so, how much experience they have. This is important because each school level has its own subject-specific and pedagogical requirements.

Age and gender:

This leads directly to the question of whether the person should have as much teaching experience as possible in order to be able to teach the material and is therefore a little older, or whether your child responds better to younger teachers. Does your child learn better from male or female tutors?

Personal description (personality, teaching style):

In this context, also consider which personality type motivates you or your child best. It is also very important to know what type of learner you or your child are. Look specifically for teachers who teach using the appropriate methodology. The relevant information can be found on the tutor's profile page in the "Personal description" section. However, you can also search for specific characteristics in the "Search term" filter.

2. Tutoring search: Financial and organisational criteria

In addition to the qualifications and characteristics of the teacher, it is important to consider financial and organisational issues, which will also narrow down your selection:

Hourly wage:

Compare different profiles and find out what hourly wage you can expect to pay for the desired qualifications and experience. Regardless of this, you should decide for yourself how much money you are willing to invest. You can find out how much tutoring lessons generally cost here.

Place of residence/lesson location:

And last but not least, the organisational issues, which should not be underestimated. Where should the private lessons take place? Do you have time to travel to your teacher, or are you specifically looking for someone who can come to your home? The fact is: the closer the teacher lives to you, the greater the likelihood that they will be able to drop by spontaneously in an emergency during exam periods.

Availability:

On which day and at what time would you or your child like the tutoring session to take place? At Tutor24, tutors indicate when they are available. Write to tutors who can meet your schedule requirements. If the time of the tutoring session needs to vary, consider how flexible the person you choose needs to be. You can see this by looking at how many green boxes there are in their schedule on their profile page. In this context, also check the "Personal description" section to find out whether they offer online tutoring (e.g. via Zoom).
