Get the necessary teaching materials

Make sure that you are in possession of the teaching materials with which the student is working.

Teaching materials can help you in many ways. On the one hand, you can understand to a certain extent how your pupil has been confronted with the subject matter so far: What explanatory approaches have been used? What are the aims of the teaching material? This enables you to deal with problems, use explanatory approaches and teaching methods, that have not yet been used. It also helps you, plan your lessons in such a way that the specified objective can be achieved in the best possible way.

Keeping minutes

If you have several tutoring students, you don't want to run the risk of getting into a mess. Keep a record of each individual student, the progress he or she has made as well as what problems have been worked on and where further action is needed. Use these notes to help you prepare your next lesson.

Promoting a good learning environment

Choose a place where you will not be disturbed or distracted. A good learning environment also includes that your lesson is a safe haven and that your student knows that he or she can ask any questions unhindered without feeling stupid. Also be humorous so that the student can feel comfortable.

Communicating with clients

A good tutor knows their students and understands their needs. Discuss with your students what their expectations of the tutoring sessions are and how you can help them achieve their goals.

Plan each lesson at least one week in advance and have them confirmed the day before. Be equally flexible with the teaching material. Do not insist on your agenda, if the pupil's needs have changed in the meantime.

Set boundaries

Before you start teaching your student, discuss where their boundaries lie, discuss what their boundaries are. Familiarise your student with your schedule and also how often you are available. Also agree beyond this, whether or not your students may contact you outside of the lesson contact you with questions outside of the lesson or not.

During the lesson, any distractions such as phones, tablets and computers (with the exception of online tutoring) should be switched off and put away.
