Jugendliche und Lernen: 5 Tipps

As you can read in the previous article, crucial learning strategies already solidify in primary school age Learning strategies already solidify during primary school age. If curiosity was encouraged during primary school, along with suitable learning strategies and a positive attitude towards learning, learning should not become an insurmountable hurdle during adolescence. The following list includes tips that are generally always useful, but prove to be especially valuable during this phase of life.

1. Exercise

It's essential to utilize the urge to move during adolescence: Exercise promotes circulation and thus also increases brain performance. Moreover, abstract learning content is better remembered when linked with physical movement.

2. Sleep

Sleep not only benefits physical recovery but also serves to consolidate perceived and learned content. These processes only occur in the last third of the sleep cycle (8 hours). The issue here is that during adolescence, the internal clock ticks differently. The sleep hormone Melatonin is released up to two hours later compared to other stages of life. This results in possibly existing sleep deprivation being further exacerbated by this shift in the internal clock, preventing the learning material from being stored, and thus making all learning in vain. Therefore, it is indeed strongly recommended to get your eight hours of sleep.

3. Explain

Besides the fact that explaining intensifies the learning process, this is particularly fun during adolescence. Because in high school and gymnasium, teenagers learn many things that adults either never learned or have long forgotten. Explaining the learning material to an unknowing adult, who shows genuine interest, can motivate teenagers in many ways.

4. Write down

If the learning method through manual writing has never been used before: It's worth it! Because studies have shown that handwriting promotes memorization more efficiently and effectively than typing, as the learner is more actively involved in the learning process. This is especially recommended for learning foreign languages.

5. Tutoring

Tutoring in high school or gymnasium is helpful and often even necessary. Unlike younger students, teenagers usually do not want learning support from their parents, as they are psychologically in the process of detaching from them. Therefore, learning with classmates or bringing in a tutor, who can address the issues in the learning material specifically and individually, is recommended.
